Sand Hollow State Park
Sand Hollow State Park is one of many parks in the Southern Utah area. Many travelers come to the area to visit the very popular Zion National Park. If you are planning a trip to the area, it is worth knowing about all of the natural areas you can visit in Southern Utah. Near St. George and Hurricane, UT, Sand Hollow State Park spans 20,000 acres and is one of the largest parks in Utah. Comprised of mostly Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, recreation abounds all throughout the park. The park is open year-round, but it is important to plan your stay in the area, and staying at WillowWind RV Park allows you to have easy access to so many parks while providing a convenient and quiet home base in Hurricane, UT.
Exploring Sand Hollow
The landscape of Sand Hollow State Park has a dazzling variance, with a horizon of mountains dropped behind the red craggy cliffs and dunes which overlook a sparkling reservoir.
Sand Hollow Reservoir
Across 1,322 acres, Sand Hollow Reservoir is popular for its warm waters (around 81-86 degrees during the summer months). Surrounding the water are the red sandy beaches where visitors can set themselves up for a relaxing day with a picnic. Fishing is another popular activity you can do at the reservoir, with potential catches of bluegill, catfish, crappie, and bass. Take a boat or jet ski out for a day on the water — many visitors take advantage of the temperate water for skiing, wakeboarding, paddle boarding, and other water sports.
Recreation at Sand Hollow
Throughout the sand dunes, visitors can find OHV or ATV trails across approximately 6,000 acres with 15,000 acres at Sand Mountain. There are three trails that vary in levels of difficulty, so there is something for everyone. If you don’t travel with equipment, there are many options for rentals in the area.
Sand Hollow Reservoir OHV Trail
Take the easy route, Sand Hollow Reservoir OHV Trail for 12 miles point to point, which is fun for all skill levels.
Milt’s Mile OHV Loop
Although this trail does require some technical driving skills, Milt’s Mile Loop is considered to be of moderate difficulty.
The Maze Trail
Those looking to challenge themselves can take the hard path called The Maze Trail which runs 11 miles of steep inclines and cliffs.
Aside from driving across the dunes, visitors can take advantage of the campground facilities in the area around the water and take in the amazing views of the blue water against the orange and red sandy shores.
Landscape and Wildlife
Aside from fish in the reservoir, there are many opportunities to see the native wildlife in the area. Roaming through the park, you may spot a coyote, rabbit, and fox, along with many desert reptiles like lizards, scorpions, or snakes. The landscape provides respite from the summer heat in the reservoir, but the sandy dunes and beaches paint a vivid red desert surrounding.
Golfing at Sand Hollow
Ranked number one for golf courses in Utah, Sand Hollow Golf Course spans 18 holes and takes advantage of the rocky cliffs that make this area so unique. The best part of playing this course is the vista views, which can be seen from all sides while walking through the course.
