Many of these incredible state parks are on the way to Utah’s Mighty Five and are abundant with fishing and beautiful sights to behold. Sand Hollow State Park, Quail Creek State Park, Kolob Reservoir, Pine Valley Reservoir, and Mammoth Creek are just a few you can visit in the area. These parks and reservoirs also are in close proximity to WillowWind RV Park, so you can enjoy a comfortable home base near all of the natural Utah water sources!

Sand Hollow State Park

One of Utah’s many reservoirs, near the city of Utah, Sand Hollow State Park is only just over six miles from WillowWind RV Park, a nine-minute drive. In this reservoir, you can opportunities to catch bluegill, largemouth bass, and black crappie fish. It’s family-friendly with picnic tables and trails as well as quiet for those who are coming alone to fish.

Quail Creek State Park

About a 12-minute drive and eight miles from WillowWind RV Park, Quail Creek State Park provides ample opportunities to hike, fish, and boat. The Quail Creek reservoir was created in 1985 to provide water to the community of St. George and opened as a state park in 1986. The water actually comes from the Virgin River and is carried to the reservoir through a buried pipeline. The reservoir has two dams, one earth embankment dam, and a roller concrete compacted dam. The reservoir is about 120 feet deep and gives fishers the chance to catch rainbow trout, bullhead catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass.

Kolob Reservoir

Kolob Reservoir is about 36 miles from WillowWind, or about an hour’s drive. If you’re traveling from the area north of Zion National Park, it is the perfect place to stop before making your way to your home base at WillowWind. This reservoir is 250 acres that sit at 8,000 feet altitude, bordering the Pine Valley Mountains as well as the Markagunt Plateau. Heading south from Kolob Reservoir, the drive can be quite scenic as the drive bisects Zion National Park, with all the splendor that surrounds it. This reservoir actually has a blue ribbon for its abundant fishing history!

Pine Valley Reservoir

A one-hour drive from WillowWind, about 37 miles from Panguitch, and 10 miles Northeast of Tropic, Pine Valley Reservoir offers a nice break from the dry landscape that surrounds it. Here you can hike, boat, or fish in close proximity to the small lake of Pine Valley. If you are looking to explore the surrounding area, you can hike the Burro Canyon or Henderson Canyon trails which connect to each other and have a rich history – interestingly, the Henderson Canyon was once used to transport ice from Pine Lake to Tropic! The lake is abundant for fishing enthusiasts, offering catches like rainbow, tiger, cutthroat, brook, or brown trout.

Mammoth Creek

Located next to the Huntington reservoir, Mammoth Creek is about a one-and-a-half-hour drive from WillowWind RV Park. This reservoir offers a plentiful source of both tiger trout and cutthroat trout. The forecast for fishing from March to May can sometimes be difficult if there is still snowmelt and runoff in the area. It is said that float fishing provides great opportunities for catches up to 18 inches. There are so many activities to do in this area aside from fishing – horseback riding, picnicking, bicycling, there's something for everybody!

Getting a Fishing License

To get a fishing license in Utah you can either purchase them online, over the phone, or in person. You can go to wildlife.utah.gov to purchase or see where the nearest retailer is to purchase your fishing license. You can purchase a license for a duration of three days, seven days, a year, or multi-year depending on how often you plan on casting a line in the area. Make sure you keep an eye on when you need to renew your license.

Resources for Fishing

There are certain rules and regulations that apply to different regions in terms of hunting and fishing. It is important to review the regulations in the area you plan to visit and fish to be sure you abide by the guidelines in place. For instance, in Utah, there are limits on how many fish you can take from the area, but there are also useful tips to learn such as Free Fishing Day, which occurs on June 11 this year (2022). Check out this useful guide provided by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources for all the information: https://wildlife.utah.gov/guidebooks/2022_fishing_guidebook.pdf
